Footage surfaced of a shootout between a Tennessee woman and a Metro Nashville Police Officer that transpired in a parking lot on Friday.
Officer Josh Baker pulled over Nika N. Holbert, 31, when he noticed the Chevy Camaro she was driving was registered to was wanted on six warrants, MNPD spokesman Don Aaron said in a video statement. The owner of the vehicle, Demond M. Buchanan, was not with Holbert at the time.
Body camera footage shows Baker asking Holbert to get out of the vehicle, which she initially complied with. Once the officer found what appeared to marijuana and a white powdery substance in her bag, she became combative.
“Do me a favor and turn around,” Baker asks Holbert. She responds, “No, don’t put me in handcuffs. I haven’t done anything wrong.”
Holbert is seen running around to the car’s passenger side before getting back into the vehicle on the driver’s side. Refusing to get out of the vehicle, Baker warns Holbert that she is about to be tased. The 14-year veteran officer deploys the taser, appearing to shock the woman several times.
In between shocks, the woman is seen reaching for something in the car. Baker draws his weapon and commands Holbert to “put the gun down.” According to the video statement, Holbert shot Baker before he returned fire.
After exchanging gunfire, Holbert drives away.
Holbert crashed the car about a block away from the parking lot, and MNPD officers rendered aid at the scene of the accident. She was transported to an area hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries.
Baker, who was struck under his bulletproof vest, was listed in stable condition after undergoing surgery.
According to Aaron, the incident is under investigation by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and prosecutors from the Davidson County District Attorney’s Office.
