A Tennessee woman used quick thinking to get away from her would-be kidnapper last Sunday. The woman told police she smeared a plastic bag of dog poop in her attacker’s face after he punched her and knocked her down.
Michael Ward, 47, faces charges of aggravated robbery and aggravated kidnapping.
A 30-year-old woman was approached by 47-year-old Michael Ward while walking her dog around 1:40 p.m. last Sunday. The man, who the Knoxville Police Department identifies as homeless, grabbed the woman and tried to drag her into the woods. Ward punched her multiple times, which left her with severe face and head injuries.
The woman used a bag of dog poop, which she smeared on Ward’s face, to get him off of her. He initially backed down, apologizing, before attacking her again.
The victim took out her cell phone to call 911, and Ward grabbed her phone and ran into the woods toward a nearby river. “(The victim) said she then ran down the trail and used another walker’s phone to call the police,” the police report obtained by WBIR states.
Responding officers located Ward’s shoes and a towel he left in a clearing he had cut for himself. However, the suspect had reportedly fled in a boat he kept on the water. A police dog lost his scent near the river.
Ward was detained by a man at a convenience store two days after the incident. The man recognized his face from social media bulletins. The good samaritan asked Ward his name, and when he responded, he kept him at that location until police arrived.
