In the latest episode of the Baller Alert Show, hosts Ferrari Simmons and BT sat down with tennis star Taylor Townsend, offering fans an engaging and insightful conversation. Taylor shared her experiences on and off the court, from her recent Wimbledon victory to the realities of life as a professional athlete.
The Wimbledon Experience
Fresh off her doubles win at Wimbledon 2024, Taylor Townsend discussed the unique aspects of her victory. When asked about the perks of winning Wimbledon, she humorously noted, “They give you a trophy, but the one you get in the ceremony isn’t what you take home. They give you a smaller replica and a wooden base with your name on it.” Townsend even joked about how she considered using the trophy, saying, “I thought it would be fun to take shots out of this!”
Navigating Injuries and Unexpected Partnerships
Taylor’s journey to her Wimbledon win was not without its challenges. She revealed how an ankle injury before the French Open led to an unexpected partnership between her regular partner and Coco Gauff. “I was supposed to be playing with my partner, but I got injured. I ended up putting her with Coco, and they won the tournament,” she recounted. She humorously added, “I was like, I’ll take 5% from you, 5% from you for putting you guys together.”
Starting Young and Going Pro
Taylor’s tennis journey began at the age of four, inspired by her sister and mother. She turned professional at just 15 years old. Reflecting on her early career, she shared, “I grew up watching Venus and Serena, but I didn’t think that playing professionally was possible for me. It felt like a dream, but I didn’t know if it was something I could actually do.”
The Financial Realities of Tennis
One of the most revealing parts of the interview was Taylor’s discussion of the financial challenges in tennis. She explained how players often have to cover their own expenses, which can be substantial. “I remember winning a tournament and making $66. After they took out the $40 entry fee, I was left with $26. I was like, why even give me a check? Just give me cash!” she laughed, highlighting the financial difficulties many players face.
Balancing Life, Motherhood, and Career
Taylor also opened up about the challenges of balancing her career with motherhood. “It’s a new day every day. It’s honestly so hard,” she said, describing the difficulty of being away from her son due to constant travel. Despite these challenges, she emphasized the importance of maintaining a routine and the mental and emotional toll of her lifestyle.
Breaking Barriers and Supporting Each Other
The conversation also touched on the challenges faced by black athletes in tennis. Taylor spoke candidly about feeling the need to compete harder against fellow black athletes. “I felt like I was always competing against other black players, as if there could only be one of us,” she said. She stressed the importance of support within the community, adding, “Hopefully, through supporting each other, we can show that it doesn’t have to be that way.”
Closing Message
Ending the show with an empowering message, Taylor Townsend offered advice to the listeners: “Don’t let anybody steal your shine. Acknowledge your accomplishments because you are doing great.” She reflected on the criticism she faced, saying, “People told me all the time that I wasn’t going to amount to anything because of what I looked like or where I came from. But I always had to prove myself, and I did.
