Yet another NFL player has been indicted for alleged animal abuse. Though this may sound familiar, this time it surfaces around Baltimore Raven Terrence Cody and it is very bizarre. Cody was arrested Monday following an investigation which stemmed from a veterinarian visit in which his dog died. Cody has been charged with a range of 15 charges including but not limited to animal cruelty, animal abuse, possession of marijuana, and…possession of an Alligator! (Yes you read that right.)
The Ravens announced the intent to release Cody on January 23, and wasted no time cutting him on Monday which was the first eligible day of official releases. Head Coach John Harbaugh has been noted saying that the Ravens “threshold for tolerance” had changed after a number of arrests had been made involving Ravens players in the off season. Harbaugh also previously released a statement saying that “It’s a privilege to play in the National Football League…a privilege to be a part of the Ravens. There’s a standard to uphold there, and we expect them to do that.”
Cody was drafted in the 2nd round of the 2010 Draft and was nearing the end of a one year deal with the Ravens. He was confined to an injury list for most of last season and only played in one game. It has been noted that the Ravens had no plans on resigning Cody as a free agent given the depth on their defensive line.
