A Texas man has been arrested after he allegedly hit and killed a man while under the influence of alcohol.
According to PEOPLE, he is also accused of driving with the corpse in the passenger seat of the car.
24-year-old Paul Garcia was arrested Saturday and booked at the Travis County Correctional Complex on several charges of traffic offenses, an accident involving injury and intoxication manslaughter with a vehicle, according to the inmate reports.
Witnesses told police they saw a Ford Focus hit a pedestrian who was crossing the street with a shopping cart around 10:30 p.m.
According to KXAN, the fatal collision happened at the intersection of Slaughter Lane and Manchaca Road.
In an arrest affidavit reported by KVUE, it is said that the victim suffered severe head injuries due to crashing through the windshield.
Garcia reportedly kept driving after hitting the victim, which led to the parts of the body and car being left on the street due to the body of the victim remaining in the passenger seat.
According to KXAN, Garcia parked his vehicle at the South Austin Beer Garden and attempted to enter, but employees noticed something seemed off.
“We didn’t know what kind of trouble he was in, we just knew it was bad,” David Pearce, co-owner said. “He was in tears. He was distraught; in a panicked state. You could see he had tears in his eyes, and it looked like he was running from something.”
Upon police arrival, Garcia took a field sobriety test that he failed, according to KXAN.
Garcia is currently being held on a $110,000 bond.
