After a 7 and a half hour jury deliberation, a Texas man who killed a police officer execution-style with two shots to the head in 2016 was sentenced to death Friday.
Reportedly, 36-year-old Otis Mckane was found guilty of Capital Murder on July 26; the jury taking no more than 30 minutes to convict him.
McKane took the life of Benjamin Edward Marconi on a busy street while the officer was writing a ticket during an overtime shift. Unfortunately for him, not only were there witnesses but the heinous slaying was caught on video.
As he was being taken to jail, McKane told reporters he “lashed out at someone who didn’t deserve it” because he was upset with the court system over a custody battle regarding his son. McKane claimed that Marconi was a random target of his anger, but prosecutors say the defendant had been stalking the officer and planning his unspeakable crime.
All in all, Marconi’s family feel justice was served with the decision to execute McKane. “From the bottom of our hearts, we are extremely proud of all the hard work you put into bringing justice for Ben and finding closure for our family,” the Marconis wrote in a statement. “And finally, to Detective Benjamin Edward Marconi—THANK YOU for making our lives better, and the lives of everyone you touched. You are eternally missed and we will NEVER forget you—rest easy sweet Ben.”
