The San Antonio Police Department is investigating after a man used an Apple AirTag to track his stolen vehicle and then killed the thief who stole it.Â
Police received a report of a stolen truck around 1 p.m. on Wednesday from a residence on the city’s north side. Unbeknownst to the thief, the vehicle’s owner used the AirTag to track it down about 20 miles from where it was stolen.
Instead of calling the police with the truck’s location, the owner confronted the person who stole it at a shopping center on San Antonio’s southeast side.Â
The man located the truck with the suspect still inside and confronted him. KHOU reports that the man allegedly shot and killed the thief.Â
Police are cautioning against confronting suspects on their own and instead reaching out to law enforcement.
“If you are to get your vehicle stolen, please do not take matters into your own hands like this,” said Nick Soliz of the SAPD. “It’s never safe, as you can see by this incident.”
Investigators found several bullet casings and two cars with the windows shot out at the scene. Police are now working to determine if the car thief was armed and if any charges will be brought against the owner.Â
