An Austin, Texas school board meeting went off topic when a local mother used her time at the podium to rant about a book she felt was inappropriate for students.
Instead of talking about COVID, the woman identified as Kara Bell ranted against a sexually explicit book found in a middle school library. The text in question comes from Out Of Darkness by Ashley Hope Pérez. Bell was upset that the book discusses the topic of sex, namely anal sex.
“I do not want my children to learn about anal sex in middle school,” Bell yelled. “I’ve never had anal sex. I don’t want to have anal sex. I don’t want my kids having anal sex. I want you to start focusing on education and not public health!”
At that point, Bell’s microphone was cut off.
According to the Lake Travis Independent School District, the book has been pulled from two middle schools in the district according to KXAN. The board will review its content.
“A district shall not remove materials from a library for the purpose of denying students access to ideas with which the district disagrees,” a board spokesperson said. “A district may remove materials because they are pervasively vulgar or based solely upon the educational suitability of the books in question.”
