On Thursday, CNN reported that the Houston Association of Realtors announced its decision to retire the word “master” to describe bedrooms and bathrooms in its listings.
As the Black Lives Matter movement progresses and demands to remove symbols of racism within corporate America, erasing “master” from real estate listings appears to be next on the to-do list.
The HAR decided to replace the word due to its correlation with slavery after multiple members voiced complaints about the controversial term.
Although the word “master” will no longer be on property listings, the HAR did not entirely prohibit its usage.
Members of the company are still allowed to use it in photo descriptions and marketing tactics.
In addition to the changes in real estate, the beverage industry also supports the fight for racial inequality. The Court of Master Sommeliers, a beverage and hospitality service organization, said that it will discontinue the use of “master” before a sommelier’s last name.
