If you’re a frequent flyer, then you know that traveling can be a mix of excitement and agony considering your destination and the overall length of your flight. What if there was a way to drastically reduce your flight time and get you to your destination faster? Imagine the standard time for a flight between New York and London at 90 minutes versus seven hours. Well, an Atlanta based Aerospace company, Hermeus Corporation is working on a solution.
Today, the Hermeus Corporation is a start-up whose four founders have all previously worked on the development of a hypersonic rocket-plane, the X- Plane for the U.S Air Force. In fact, some were even former employees of Elon Musk’s rocket startup and Jeff Bezos’ space project. The goal of the corporation is to incorporate hypersonic flight to revolutionize global travel by increasing the speed of travel over long distances to five times the speed of sound. Sounds like a pipe dream? It isn’t. Seed funders and private investors are already providing financial backing to see this concept become a reality.
As you can imagine, there won’t be any budget priced tickets once the aircraft becomes available. Current estimates start at $3,000 for a one-way ticket between NYC and London. Hermeus co-founder and CEO AJ Piplica states, “if there is a market for it, I don’t have any doubt that we could build one of these types of planes.” No need to worry, the development of an aircraft that could carry passengers would take at least a decade to perfect. In spite of the support, there are valid concerns of potential environmental impact, fuel needed to propel the aircraft, technology, and engineering capabilities. In other words, it’s not ready today but looks like it’s something to look forward to in the near future.
Would you be willing to try it out?
