Yachts are synonymous with wealth, luxury, and style. Surprisingly, the 600ft REV Ocean is now the world’s largest superyacht, and its primary use won’t be for cruising. Norwegian billionaire, Kjell Inge Roke, commissioned the ship to be a scientific research vessel, dedicated to ocean preservation.
According to the REV Ocean Foundation, the purpose of the vessel “will strive to fill critical knowledge gaps, develop innovative solutions, and bridge science, business and policy sectors to achieve positive change.” Scientists will be able to research pollution, emissions effects on the ocean, and unsustainable fishing.
Rokke is worth an estimated $3.3 billion and joins the ranks of Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerburg, Warren Buffet, Elon Musk and others who have signed the Giving Pledge, which is a commitment to give away half their fortunes to charity. The yacht will still be available for private charter with the intent to use the extensive onboard equipment to learn more about the ocean.
