The legendary movie The Wizard of Oz is known for making big moves, and the hourglass prop is living proof of that.
The iconic hourglass has been sold for $495,000.
The prop is used in the scene when the Wicked Witch tells Dorothy how much time she has left to live; the hourglass measures the passage of time. Heritage Auctions describes it as “the most recognizable signature prop from the film.”
“You see that? That’s how much longer you’ve got to be alive! And it isn’t long, my pretty! it isn’t long! I can’t wait forever to get those shoes!” The Witch says in the film.
The hourglass is 20 inches tall and a foot wide in a Gothic frame, “expertly crafted by studio artisans of wood and paper-mâché with winged gargoyles perched atop three spiraled columns,” according to Heritage Auctions. The prop was the top lot at the Heritage’s Hollywood and Entertainment Signature Auction, alongside a Willy Wonka golden ticket.
Two other items from The Wizard of Oz, including “a test version of the gingham pinafore worn by Judy Garland (which sold for $125,000) and a jacket worn by an Emerald City extra (which sold for $37,500),” were also sold at the auction proving the classic movie true worth.
