The AFC and NFC Championship games have been scheduled, and we’ll find out next Sunday who will be heading to Las Vegas for Super Bowl LVIII.
The Kansas City Chiefs are gearing up for a head-to-head matchup against the Baltimore Ravens, kicking off at 3:30 pm ET, while the Detroit Lions will face the San Francisco 49ers at 6:30 pm ET.
The reigning Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs escaped Buffalo with a narrow 27-24 win. The Bills failed to score on their three drives in the fourth quarter. Buffalo was driving late into the game, and with 44 seconds left, they left it up to their kicker, Tyler Bass, to give them a chance to tie the game with a 44-yard field goal. He missed wide right and took full responsibility after the game.
Meanwhile, the Kansas City Chiefs advanced to the AFC Championship game, and their star player, Patrick Mahomes, reached his sixth AFC Championship game in six years. This is a testament to his pure dominance within the conference. Furthermore, Mahomes and Travis Kelce have surpassed Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski, and they now hold the record for most touchdown connections in the playoffs, standing at 16. This is a record that may not be broken for some time, as Kelce and Mahomes still have a few years of connections and potentially two games left within this year’s postseason.
The Baltimore Ravens pulled away from the overachieving Houston Texans and will be hosting their first AFC title game for the first time since 1971. The game at halftime was tied 10-10, a familiar fearful sight for Ravens fans. However, on the first drive of the second half for the Ravens, Lamar Jackson took over. Scoring in six plays in less than 3 minutes, Jackson ran in for the 15-yard touchdown. Unfortunately for the Texans, they couldn’t find any positive momentum against the aggressive Baltimore defense, making this game one of the most exciting ones since Baltimore faced off against San Francisco on Christmas.
The San Fransisco 49ers needed a late touchdown from running back Christian McCaffery with 1:06 left on the clock to put away the pesky Green Bay Packers. Despite a mediocre performance by their quarterback, Brock Purdy, he delivered when it truly mattered during the last drive of the game, going 6 for 7 for 47 yards before McCaffrey finished the drive. Although Jordan Love had an opportunity to turn the game around towards the end, he has shown potential and flashes of both Aaron Rodgers and Brett Favre in his passes during Saturday night’s game.
The Packers had two opportunities to score touchdowns and had to settle for field goals, and that came back to bite them late in the game. Love finished 194 passing yards, two touchdown passes, and two interceptions. It was a tough game to lose, but Love will learn from this and can build off of his unexpected season.
The Detroit Lions put away the Tampa Bay Bucs to advance to the NFC Championship game for the first time in 32 years and only the second time in the franchise history. Despite a late touchdown in the fourth quarter, the Bucs were unable to overcome the deficit, as Baker Mayfield threw two interceptions in their defeat. Some social media users discovered after the game was over that there was enough time for the Bucs to run a play and possibly take a timeout.
