The ultimate wish for any girl is to stay young forever. Unfortunately time, along with gravity and genetics are not on our side. Although we cannot stop the process of maturing, we can do our damndest to slow it down and make it look better than ever! With a few changes and/or additions to your daily routine, you can take and keep years of aging off of your face, skin, and body.
1. MOISTURIZE! MOISTURIZE! MOISTURIZE! I cannot express that word enough. If you want to keep your skin soft and smooth moisturizing daily is important. A daily lotion containing glycerin, Shea butter, or any hydrator allows your skin to repair itself; in addition to, making smiling and squinting less arduous to the face.
2. WEAR LIGHTER MAKE-UP! Extremely heavy makeup tends to look caked on and actually will make you look much older than you truly are, or bring attention to the lines and wrinkles you may be attempting to conceal.
3. GET ENOUGH REST! By adding an extra hour to your sleep schedule, you will be giving your body not only the rest that it needs, but more than it needs and allow your body time to adjust and “wake up” without having to force yourself to get up out of the bed and rush to get ready. (Less stress in the morning + less friction caused to the face=the younger you look)
4.WASH YOUR FACE! Most people are content with washing their faces only in the evening before bed. Well, when you’re sleeping your face rubs against your pillow, which in turn rubs against your hair, causing oil and dirt to seep right back into the pores you cleaned before you lay down. Washing your face in the morning as well, helps keep your face clean and pores open. When washing your face try to avoid bar soaps, as they tend to dry out the skin, clog pores, and make the skin look ashy.
5.WEAR SUN SCREEN! Contrary to popular belief, African Americans DO need sunscreen (AA’s are more prone to skin related issues such as: hyper pigmentation, keloidal scarring, and ingrown hairs). No matter what race you are, you should wear a broad-spectrum SPF-15 or greater 365 days a year. RAIN or SHINE!
6.EAT FACE FRIENDLY FOODS! In addition to the “super healthy foods” oysters, honey, and dark chocolate; another way to keep looking like your youthful self is to consume what we call face friendly foods which include: lots of green vegetables and grains.
7.CHOOSE THE RIGHT PRODUCT! When it comes to maintaining your beauty, choosing the right products is crucial. You need to know what skin type you have (if you don’t know you can also visit a makeup counter at your local mall). Once you know which type of skin you have then you will be able to determine the best product to purchase. There are three skin types: oily, dry, and combination. Your skin type will determine the brand of products you will need to buy in order to satisfy your skin type.
8.EXERCISE! Exercising regularly will assist you in maintaining your youthful appearance. While exercising it is best not to strain too hard as it pulls down the face. Yoga is also a very relaxing exercise that can be utilized as well.
9.DRINK WATER! I cannot express this enough. If you want to be healthier and look younger you need to drink water, and plenty of it! The typical rule is to drink half of your body weight in ounces. For example, if you weigh 180 lbs, you would need to drink at least 90 ounces of water per day to supplement your body. Adding fruit, cucumbers, and mint leaves to your water can give it a different taste, if you are not sold on that fresh h2o taste.
10.EXFOLIATE! If you want to improve the texture and tone of your skin, you need to exfoliate. By exfoliating you are scrubbing away all dead cells and unclogging deep pores so that your skin can breathe. By exfoliating you will begin to notice your face looking and feeling softer and firmer.
In addition to the tips listed above, something a simple as laughing and walking more can and will give you a more youthful emergence. Small steps today, can lead to a younger looking you tomorrow. “The beauty of a woman is not in a facial mole, but true beauty in a woman is reflected in her soul. It is the caring that she lovingly gives, the passion that she knows.” –Audrey Hepburn xoxo
