The Dallas Cowboys granted running back Ezekiel Elliott his release from the team before the Week 18 games, giving the Ohio State alumnus the ability to sign with a playoff team in need of depth at the running back position.
There are not many teams currently in need, and Elliott isn’t the hottest commodity at the moment. However, the opportunity to sign with another team is a significant option for Elliott, rather than finishing the season with a disappointing Dallas team.
Elliott finished his season in Dallas with 226 yards on 74 rushing attempts, three touchdowns, and a fumble. The Dallas Cowboys are 3-2 in their last five games, but this season they sit with a 7-9 record and a disappointing roster construction.
Elliott’s performance wasn’t heavily impacted by the absence of injured quarterback Dak Prescott, though the team’s offensive flow changed drastically. Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones released a statement regarding Elliott’s departure, honoring his legacy with the team.
“Out of respect and appreciation for Zeke and wanting to provide him with an opportunity to pursue any potential playoff participation possible, we are releasing him from the Cowboys roster today. As I have said many times previously, Zeke’s impact as one of the greatest to ever play with the Star on their helmet will never change and is etched in our record books and history forever. We thank him, love him, and wish him the absolute best.”
It will be interesting to see if any teams reach out to Elliott within the next week and a half.
