The Disney Princess Effect: Girls Have Always Been Taught To Date Up

Society has taught us from a tender young age that there is absolutely nothing wrong with “dating up”. Why do you think all of the Disney Princess’ married a PRINCE Charming? Marrying a man who can provide for his family was never a bad thing until some insecure man came and made a woman feel like she should be ashamed of securing a stable future. I’ve always felt that if a man makes a woman feel like she she should be ashamed for wanting a good life for her (future) family, he should be ashamed for not being able to provide it. No man who can provide for his family ever opposes things like this. What’s the alternative to living well? Living poorly?

But back to the matter at hand, women have been groomed since pre-school to aspire to be Princesses and marry a Prince. Here’s a factual breakdown of the Disney Princess in every modern day woman.

Cinderella – Cinderella is the girl who comes from humble beginnings. Actually, what’s less than humble beginnings? That would be her. To escape her harsh life she is blessed with an expensive dress and luxurious heels in hopes that she will impress a Baller. And it works. She gets him to notice her and they live happily ever after.

Jasmine – Princess Jasmine is a girl who’s father wants her to marry a well off man. Jasmine comes from a well off family and the last thing they want to do is taint their bloodline with some riff raff. Alladin pretends to be a Baller to get Jasmine’s attention. It works. She finds out he lies and tries to act as though she would have loved him the same despite the fact he was a street kid. All lies. She wouldn’t have even known him.

Pocahontas – This is basically interracial relationships in a nutshell and though John Smith wasn’t a “Prince” per se, he was doing better than Pocahontas was financially…and she loved everything about it, so much she defied her parents wishes and married a white man.

Beauty & The Beast – Poor girl (Belle) moves into a big house with an ugly rich man. She learns to love him despite the fact he mistreats her. Eventually her love for him makes him a better man. That last part isn’t very realistic.

Sleeping Beauty – A beautiful rich girl awakened from a curse by Prince Charming. Notice none of the 7 broke roommates she was living with could save her.

Lion King – Simba, the heir to the throne (a Baller), ends up marrying the girl he grew up with (Nala). This happens a lot in the world of Ballers. They usually end up marrying and having kids with college sweethearts. Then they end up cheating but that’s a story for another fairytale.

The Little Mermaid – Arial is similar to Cinderella in the fact that she uses her Baller to get away from her current situation and that she has to be someone she’s not to get him. The only difference is Arial’s “Prince” wasn’t an actual Prince and she actually dated down, in a sense, considering she was a princess. But he gave her a better life because no one wants to live under the sea anyway.
