‘The Matrix’ is coming back! Lana Wachowski is set to write and direct the fourth installment of The Matrix, resurrecting Keanu Reeves’ role as Neo and Carrie-Anne Moss as Trinity, respectively.
According to Variety, Warner Bros. Pictures and Village Roadshow Pictures will produce and globally distribute the film.
“We could not be more excited to be re-entering ‘The Matrix’ with Lana,” Toby Emmerich, chairman of Warner Bros. said. “Lana is a true visionary — a singular and original creative filmmaker — and we are thrilled that she is writing, directing, and producing this new chapter in ‘The Matrix’ universe.”
Wachowski will have the help of Alessandro Hemob and David Mitchell to write the film. As well as help with production from Grant Hill. Filming is projected to begin at the top of 2020.
The article confirms Warner Bros. has been trying for the past couple years to get back into The Matrix, but producing rights had been on hold slowing the project down. Due to Reeve’s strong summer success at the box office, the company was able to speed up the development.
“The Matrix,” “The Matrix Reloaded” and “The Matrix Revolutions” have collectively earned more than $1.6 billion at the box office globally. All three were written and directed by Wachowski and her sister, Lilly, starring Reeves and Moss.
“Many of the ideas Lilly and I explored 20 years ago about our reality are even more relevant now. I’m very happy to have these characters back in my life and grateful for another chance to work with my brilliant friends,” Wachowski said.
The first “Matrix” had its 20th anniversary this year, marked by special screenings at select AMC locations starting on August 30, making this comeback even more special.
