In a heartfelt and reflective statement on Wednesday evening, former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama addressed the nation in response to the 2024 presidential election results. The Obamas offered their congratulations to President-elect Donald Trump and Senator J.D. Vance, who secured victory over Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic candidate, and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz.
In a joint Instagram post, the couple emphasized the importance of democratic norms and the peaceful transfer of power, while acknowledging their disagreement with the Republican ticket on various issues.
“Millions of Americans made their voices heard—not just for president, but for leaders at every level. We want to congratulate President Trump and Senator Vance on their victory,” the Obamas wrote. They noted their support and pride for Harris and Walz, praising the campaign run by their Democratic colleagues and expressing gratitude to all the volunteers who worked tirelessly throughout the race.
The former president also used the statement to reflect on the challenges facing the nation. “America has been through a lot in recent years,” Obama said, citing the aftermath of a global pandemic, economic struggles, and the general sense of uncertainty felt by many citizens. He pointed out that these conditions created challenges for democratic incumbents around the globe.
Despite the outcome, the Obamas maintained a message of hope and collaboration: “The good news is that these problems are solvable—but only if we listen to each other and abide by core democratic norms.” Their words stressed the need for unity and the extension of grace, even across political divides. “Progress requires us to extend good faith and grace—even to people with whom we deeply disagree.”
Earlier in the year, the Obamas had strongly endorsed Vice President Harris, with Barack Obama announcing their full support in a post on X, stating, “Michelle and I believe she’ll make a fantastic President.”
