Previously it was reported that not only did the cast of “Straight Outta Compton” not receive any Oscar nominations, they didn’t receive any tickets to the awards show either.
According to The Academy, the lack of SOC invites isn’t their fault. Though the cast and majority of the crew, including Dr. Dre and Ice Cube, were not invited to the ceremony, the 4 nominated writers of the film were. Per The Academy, they don’t have anything to do with the lists.
They tell PEOPLE that they only invite nominees, anyone else must be invited by their studio — which in this case would be Universal Pictures. The Academy says that it is up to Universal Pictures to pull from their set allotment of Oscar invites, so the blame falls on them.
This year Universal Pictures was the distributor for films such as Jurassic World, Trainwreck, Furious 7, Ted 2, Minions, Fifty Shades of Grey and more. I wonder who else didn’t get their invitations in the mail.
Are you believing the Academy’s story or is it just a cop out?
