The Taliban is blocking Afghans from leaving the country.
President Joe Biden recently announced plans for the U.S. to leave Afghanistan, which is set to be done by Aug. 31. However, he also has spoken about keeping the option to stay longer available, USA Today reports.
During a virtual meeting on Tuesday, Biden sat down with the leaders of the Group Seven nations to discuss his ideas for the U.S. and Afghan allies’ exit from the country. Biden said the Pentagon favors him sticking with Aug. 31 withdrawal, citing security risks for the U.S. military, which ISIS-K could potentially attack.
Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said his group would not accept any “extensions” to Biden’s deadline. He also mentioned that Afghans should refrain from trying to leave the country. According to the news outlet, the Taliban plans on blocking Afghans from leaving as the Aug. 31 date approaches.
During a Tuesday press conference, the Taliban spokesperson said women should stay inside and that Afghans should not try to make their way to the airport.
