The Weeknd is ushering into a new era as it appears he’s begun the process of “killing” his stage name.
The singer has updated his social media accounts to his birth name, Abel Tesfaye, after previously telling W Magazine that he wanted to “kill” his stage name and “be reborn.”
“I’m going through a cathartic path right now,” the 33-year-old told W Magazine earlier this month.
“It’s getting to a place and a time where I’m getting ready to close The Weeknd chapter,” he explained. “I’ll still make music, maybe as Abel, maybe as The Weeknd. But I still want to kill The Weeknd. And I will, eventually. I’m definitely trying to shed that skin and be reborn.”
According to Tesfaye, this album might be his “last hurrah as The Weeknd.”
“This is something that I have to do,” he said. “As The Weeknd, I’ve said everything I can say.”
