The White House is stepping and calling for an urgent rollback of the Supreme Court’s decision to end the Biden administration’s moratorium on evictions.
On Thursday, the Supreme Court ruled to allow landlords the option to evict renters who may be struggling in the midst of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The court, which is led by majority conservatives, granted the request by a group of landlords who wanted the eviction moratorium lifted, U.S. News reports.
Initially, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued the moratorium to follow through until Oct. 3. The decision was made in a 6 to 3 vote. Now, millions of people and families may be forced out of their homes, leaving them more susceptible to catching COVID-19.
“The Biden Administration is disappointed that the Supreme Court has blocked the most recent CDC eviction moratorium while confirmed cases of the Delta variant are significant across the country,” said White House press secretary Jen Psaki.
She added that Joe Biden “once again calling on all entities that can prevent evictions – from cities and states to local courts, landlords, Cabinet agencies – to urgently act to prevent evictions,” Psaki said.
In the meantime, the White House has offered some resources for at-risk renters. One of those options is for the Treasury Department to make obtaining emergency rental assistance more accessible.
