Third Person Arrested in Connection to Sacramento Mass Shooting

Authorities confirmed they have arrested a third person in connection to the mass shooting in Sacramento, California that left six dead and a dozen others injured. 

The Sacramento Police Department said that Daviyonne Dawson, 31, was arrested Monday night on charges of being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm. However, he is not charged with crimes directly related to the shooting.

Fox News reported that he was released from the Sacramento County jail on Tuesday. 

Dandrae Martin, 26, and his brother, Smiley Martin, 27, have already been arrested in connection with the deadly gunfire. 

Smiley Martin, 27, was taken into custody Tuesday morning. He got medical treatment in a hospital from the injuries he suffered during the shooting in Sacramento’s entertainment district Sunday morning.

He faces charges of possessing a firearm by a prohibited person and possession of a machine gun, authorities said.

Dandrae Martin is charged with assault with a firearm and being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm. 

During the tragedy, more than 100 shots were fired, which caused panic as hundreds of people tried to flee from the gunfire. Video from witnesses was posted on social media and show rapid gunfire for at least 45 seconds as people screamed.

Three men and three women were fatally shot. 

Police said they are investigating to see if a fight broke out prior to the shooting was connected.

During the investigation, detectives said they were able to identify Dawson as the man seen carrying a handgun after the gunfire erupted.

However, Investigators don’t believe the handgun was used in the shooting.

Last year, prosecutors urged the state parole board not to release Smiley Martin early.

He was given from a 10-year sentence — and they noted his prior convictions for possessing an assault weapon, stealing electronics from department stores and beating a girlfriend he encouraged to be a prostitute.

“Martin’s criminal conduct is violent and lengthy,” a Sacramento prosecutor wrote in a letter. “Martin has committed several felony violations and clearly has little regard for human life and the law.”
