On April 5th, thirteen University of Louisiana-Lafayette football players entered a dorm room and stole $2,400 worth of stuff that belonged to another student. Sources say the incident was caught on tape.
Three weeks later, the Louisiana-Lafayette football players were arrested and charged with conspiring to commit felony theft in the dorm room burglary incident. As a result of the impending legal issues, the University has suspended the players, citing an unspecified violation of team rules, refusing to discuss the April 5th incident.
Among the 13 in hot water with the law, eight were expected to start this forthcoming season, including All-American linebacker Joe Dillon and two running backs, who were expected to face off for the starting position.
Wednesday morning, the team’s head coach, Mark Hudspeth, released a statement apologizing to the University on behalf of the football program.
“On behalf of our football program, I would like to apologize to Cajun Nation and the University. We do not condone the behavior that was represented and we expect higher standards of our student-athletes. We work diligently every day to guide, educate and develop these young men, so it is disappointing when we do not meet those standards. We will be respectful of the legal process as it runs its course.”
The players have since been released on bond.
