In today’s “WTH News”, a high school basketball player is having a problem with Canadian immigration. Jonathan Nicola, a South Sudanese native, entered Canada on a student visa through an immigration program called Canada Homestay. Canada Homestay is an organization that finds homes for foreign students.
Nicola was the star center for the Central Catholic Comets during the 2015-16 season, standing at 6’9″ and 202lbs. Unfortunately, his student visa could soon be terminated. What does a 17 year old do to violate Canada’s Immigration Refugee Protection Act? Well for starters, let’s talk about his age. Allegedly, Nicola isn’t 17. Per evidence obtained by the Canada Border Services Agency, he is believed to be the tender age of 30 – a far cry and reach from a high school student. This means someone lied on the paperwork. I’m not the brightest bulb in the world, but I am far from the dullest. How young did Nicola look and who verified his paperwork?
Nicola is currently in custody with a hearing scheduled for next week. According to Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board spokesman Stephen Fields, parents have nothing to be concerned about and students were not in danger.
“Generally speaking, if we felt at any time that there is any kind of threat to any of our students at any of our schools, then we would act appropriately,” Fields told the Star.
