Authorities in Belize are investigating the tragic deaths of three American women found unresponsive in their beachside resort over the weekend.

The victims, identified as 23-year-old Kaoutar Naqqad, 24-year-old Imane Mallah, and 26-year-old Wafae El-Arar, were staying at the Royal Kahal Beach Resort on Ambergris Caye, according to Belize police. Officials suspect drug overdoses may have played a role, though the exact cause remains unconfirmed.

Resort staff became concerned after surveillance footage showed the women entering their rooms Thursday night and not reemerging. When repeated attempts to contact them failed, hotel employees used a master key to check the room Saturday morning, where they discovered the women motionless.

First responders noted the presence of froth around their mouths, a potential sign of overdose. Authorities also reported finding alcohol and gummies at the scene.

“We’re not saying at this time that the gummies caused death, but we’re looking at every possibility,” Police Commissioner Chester Williams told Belize’s News 5 Live, adding that investigators are determining whether the gummies were purchased locally or brought into the country.

There were no visible injuries or signs of forced entry, and officers found snacks, vapes, liquids, and electronic devices in the room.

The city of Revere, Massachusetts, where the women lived, issued a statement on social media mourning their loss.

“The City of Revere extends our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the three local women who tragically and unexpectedly passed away in Belize,” the post read.

Police say the investigation is ongoing.
