The beginning of the new year is here! New Year’s Eve brings parties, new attitudes, new goals, and for most black people, it comes with superstitions.

You know all the typical childhood superstitions, right? Don’t step on a crack or you’ll break your mamas back, or don’t split a pole. Well, the superstitions that were instilled in some of us growing up is a little bit different. Let’s touch on three of them. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

1. Eating Black Eyed Peas Brings Good Luck And Good Health.  This is a superstition that comes from the South, but I was raised in Indiana, and I grew up hearing this one! Everybody knows in order to have good luck throughout the new year you HAVE to eat black-eyed peas.⠀

2. Wash All Your Clothes. Do not, under any circumstances, come into the new year, without washing all of your clothes. PERIOD! I can guarantee your mom has told you this. I don’t know what the urgency is about, but they said what they said! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

3. Whoever You Bring The New Year In With Is Who You Will Be With The Rest Of The Year.  Now chile, make sure you spend the New Year with people you want to grow with. If you plan on leaving someone in 2019, leave them at home this NYE. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

What New Year’s superstitions did you grow up hearing?
