Tide asks that consumers stop using warm water to wash their clothes to help the Earth beat climate change.
According to CNN, Tide has launched a new campaign with a mission to decarbonize laundry. As a part of this mission, the popular laundry detergent company urges buyers in North America to wash three out of every four loads of laundry with cold water instead of hot. Tide hopes to accomplish this goal by 2030.
If consumers get down with the program, Tide says the results will have the same impact on greenhouse gas emissions as removing about a million cars from the road for a year.
“There is no tradeoff. You will save $150 a year in energy costs; your garments will last longer. And by the way, you’re helping to save the planet,” Shailesh Jejurikar, CEO of Procter & Gamble’s fabric and home care division, said in an interview. “It’s a beautiful win-win-win if we get this right.” As climate change becomes a bigger issue, more and more companies are taking a stance to do their part.
“This is going to be the defining decade for where we end up on climate change,” Jejurikar said. “If we don’t get this situation under control in the coming years, we are going to pay the price. There is a need to act now.” The company says the move is something customers want to be a part of. “More and more consumers want to do something. We are trying to give them a chance to take their ordinary daily actions and make them have an extraordinary impact,” Jejurikar said.
And don’t worry, Tide says cold water will get your clothes just as clean as hot water. The company even plans on partnering with Hanes to show consumers that using Tide and washing clothes in cold water is just as effective as hot water. “We have amazing technologies across the board that ensure consumers will not see a difference,” Jejurikar said.
