Tiger Woods’ DUI arrest and crash is now followed by a public statement from the golf legend, who says he’s stepping away to get himself right. After his March 27 arrest in Jupiter Island, Florida, Woods broke his silence on March 31 with a message that didn’t dance around anything.

“I know and understand the seriousness of the situation I find myself in today,” Woods said. “I am stepping away for a period of time to seek treatment and focus on my health. This is necessary in order for me to prioritize my well-being and work toward lasting recovery.”

He kept the tone focused and forward-looking, making it clear this isn’t a quick reset.

“I’m committed to taking the time needed to return in a healthier, stronger, and more focused place, both personally and professionally,” he continued. “I appreciate your understanding and support, and ask for privacy for my family, loved ones, and myself at this time.”

The arrest came after Woods’ Land Rover flipped during an attempt to pass a pressure-cleaning truck towing a trailer, according to Martin County Sheriff John M. Budensiek. Deputies said Woods appeared impaired at the scene, although he reportedly blew “triple zeros” on a breathalyzer test and refused a urinalysis. Authorities also stated he had bloodshot eyes and was found with hydrocodone pills.

Woods has pleaded not guilty and requested a jury trial, so the legal process is still unfolding. Still, the bigger shift right now is personal.

His ex-wife, Elin Nordegren, is reportedly concerned as those closest to him watch how this plays out. Because while Woods has fought his way back before, this moment is asking for something different, and he’s choosing to step back and face it directly.
