A “Bipartisan Coalition” made up of several states has launched an investigation into TikTok and what critics call the platform’s potential on users’ mental health.
The investigation includes multiple state attorneys generals from states like California, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Nebraska, Vermont, and Tennessee.
In a statement shared this week, California AG Rob Bonta said this nationwide investigation aims to get “much-needed answers” while also reviewing the methods used by the platform to boost engagement from younger users.
“Our children are growing up in the age of social media—and many feel like they need to measure up to the filtered versions of reality that they see on their screens,” Bonta continued. “We know this takes a devastating toll on children’s mental health and well-being. But we don’t know what social media companies knew about these harms and when.”
Bonta explained that will help decide whether TikTok is “violating the law.”
