TikTok Updating Community Guidelines to Ban Content Glorifying Eating Disorders, Misgendering, Misogyny, and Deadnaming

TikTok announced it is updating its community guidelines to make the platform a safer space. Videos that glorify eating disorders, dangerous viral challenges, and hateful ideologies will no longer be tolerated.

The video app is banning misgendering, deadnaming, misogyny, and content promoting conversion therapy.

“We’re making this change, in consultation with eating disorders experts, researchers, and physicians, as we understand that people can struggle with unhealthy eating patterns and behavior without having an eating disorder diagnosis,” the company said in an announcement.

It continued, “We use a combination of technology and people to identify and remove violations of our Community Guidelines, and we will continue training our automated systems and safety teams to uphold our policies.”

According to a TikTok report published Tuesday, 91 million videos were removed for violating content guidelines in the third quarter of 2021. That equates to about one percent of all videos that were uploaded during that time period.
