Apparently, displaying an upside-down pineapple is a secret for couples and singles interested in swinging.
Over the past few months, there have been news stories about cruise ship brawls connected to feuds over mé·nage à trois that went poorly. While what couples do on their own is none of our business, some of their hookup secrets are coming to light. In a TikTok video, Spencer Aronfeld, who goes by the name “Cruiseship Lawyer,” broke down one of the signs a couple or single is interested in having a fun time is the positioning of a pineapple.
Aronfeld said, after posting about one of the cruise ship incidents, he got many questions about pineapples and them being placed upside down.
“I did a little research, and apparently, if you’re on a cruise and somebody posts an upside-down pineapple on their cabin door, that is a signal — sort of a bat signal if you will, that the couple inside that cabin are open to swinging,” explained Aronfeld.
There are details on how long the upside-down pineapple has been a thing, but it must be relatively old as several TikTokers have made their own posts addressing the trend. One TikToker made a video about her neighbors inviting her over. When the camera was flipped to show her neighbors’ home, a swimming towel with pineapples on it was turned upside down. Another video showed a woman shopping at a grocery store, picking up a pineapple and placing it upside down in her cart.
