Angela Bassett was nominated for an Oscar for her portrayal of Tina Turner in What’s Love Got To Do With It, and as the film turns 30, Turner is praising Bassett’s performance.
Bassett was named one of Time Magazine’s “100 Most Influential People of 2023,” and Turner wrote the dedication. She had nothing but praise for the How Stella Got Her Groove Back actress, recalling that she initially had doubts. But, in the end, Turner felt she was the “perfect” choice.
“Angela, the first time we met, you didn’t look, sound, or move like me—that came later after you worked so hard to make it happen,” the singer wrote. “But even then, I could see that the young woman standing before me had strength, determination, and big, big dreams, just like me.”
She praised Bassett for her ability to find her “inner Tina” instead of imitating her.
“You never mimicked me,” Turner continued. “Instead, you reached deep into your soul, found your inner Tina, and showed her to the world.”
The “Proud Mary” singer complimented Bassett’s ability to become the characters she plays, whether it be portraying Turner in a biopic or the Queen of Wakanda.
“You honor all the women you play, just as you honored me,” she concluded the touching dedication. “And you’re still perfect.”
Bassett acknowledged the honor in a post on Instagram, saying she is “proud” to be included in the 2023 Time 100 list of the most influential people. “Speechless,” she captioned the post.
