In the wake of Hurricane Dorian, the death toll in the Bahamas has now risen to 50, and the official count could rise dramatically, but government officials have declined to say how many deaths remain uncounted, according to recent reports.
Amid relief efforts, celebrities like NBA legend Michael Jordan have stepped up to help. In fact, the baller has officially announced that he will donate $1 million to relief efforts in the Bahamas.
“I am devastated to see the destruction that Hurricane Dorian has brought to the Bahamas, where I own property and visit frequently,” Jordan said in a statement shared on Twitter by his manager and spokeswoman, Estee Portnoy.
“My heart goes out to everyone who is suffering and to those who have lost loved ones,” he added. ”As the recovery and relief efforts continue, I will be tracking the situation closely and working to identify non-profit agencies where the funds will have the most impact. The Bahamian people are strong and resilient, and I hope that my donation will be of help as they work to recover from this catastrophic storm.”
Jordan is no stranger to helping out following natural disasters; he also donated $2 million last year to support North Carolina after Hurricane Florence.
