A toddler was shot in the head during a suspected road rage incident on Chicago’s Lake Shore Drive, authorities said.
According to NBC News, the shooting happened around 11 a.m. on Tuesday, after an incident “escalated into shots being fired for approximately two blocks,” police commander Jake Alderden told the press at a news conference.
The 21-month-old toddler was placed in critical care at Lurie Children’s Hospital after suffering a bullet wound to his head.
The car the child was in crashed after the shooting, and a good Samaritan stopped to help, Alderden said. Authorities said that driver took the boy and a female passenger to a hospital for immediate treatment.
In a statement on Tuesday, Dr. Marcelo Malakooti, hospital associate chief medical officer and medical director of the pediatric intensive care unit, said, “We are doing all we can do for this little boy and thank everyone for their concern.”
