Tony Allen’s recent podcast appearances have been more entertaining than ever. During a hilarious moment on Grind City Media, he called out the New Orleans Pelicans for being a poorly run franchise. Allen, who played 22 games for the team during the 2017-2018 season before retiring from the NBA after 14 seasons, didn’t hold back.
Allen shared that he only played in seven of the 22 games he suited up for and didn’t have many positive things to say about former Pelicans head coach Alvin Gentry. He called Gentry “one of the worst coaches ever” and joked about the coach’s forgetfulness, noting that Gentry didn’t write down many of the plays and would often lose track of what was happening during games.
Criticism of the Pelicans and their ownership has been circulating for a while, especially regarding the use of the same medical staff for both the New Orleans Saints and the Pelicans. Allen humorously added to this by recalling that the team sometimes practiced on the Saints’ football field and even ate the leftover food from the NFL squad.
“Yeah, he [Gentry] was one of the worst coaches in the world,” Allen joked. “He was old, man. He’d forget speeches like, ‘Fellas, when we… What are they doing wrong?’ He’d say, ‘We all gotta rebound and, uh… What else? Oh yeah, get back in transition.’ Sometimes we practiced on the football field. We were shooting baskets in the goalpost. Whatever the Saints didn’t eat, we got the leftovers. Shoutout to the Pelicans—worst organization in the NBA!”
Everyone on the podcast couldn’t stop laughing as Allen playfully bashed the Pelicans, calling them the worst organization in the league. Catch the hilarious video of Allen sharing his stories below, as he continues to keep it real about his time with the team.
