Whether it’s a heartwarming speech, emotional performances, or surprise appearances, the BET Awards have consistently space where the most iconic moments in entertainment and culture unfold. Ahead of Sunday’s 2024 show, check out some of our favorite moments:
Cardi B’s Baby Bump Reveal (2021)
The 2021 BET Awards audience and watchers were sent into a shock after the “Bodak Yellow” rapper revealed she was expecting a second child with her husband, Offset. Cardi made the announcement during a performance onstage with Migos, wearing a black and glittery bodysuit featuring a sheer section that exposed her baby bump. Shortly after, Cardi took to Instagram and shared a photo of her belly covered in a white plaster cast, tagging her husband in caption with a “#2” sign. However, that was not the first time Cardi revealed her pregnancy on television. In 2018, the rapper announced she was pregnant with her first child on ‘Saturday Night Live.’
Chris Brown’s Emotional Redemption Plea (2010)
In 2010, Chris Brown made a bold attempt in asking for forgiveness from society and the entertainment industry after facing scrutiny for his domestic violence incident with his former girlfriend, Rihanna. His emotional performance was significant moment in his journey to redemption and stands as one of the most unforgettable moment in the show’s history. Taking the stage to honor the Michael Jackson, one year after his death, Brown delivered exceptional performance by channeling Jackson’s iconic dance moves and electrifying stage presence. With his performances of “Billie Jean,” “Remember The Time,” and “Man In The Mirror,” Brown quickly stole the hearts of the audience and became the talk of the night. Nevertheless, the singer’s vulnerability and respect for Jackson connected with the world and ultimately put him back in good graces with the industry.
Lauren London Honoring Nipsey Hussle’s Legacy (2019)
The marathon continued as Lauren London stood alongside Nipsey Hussle’s family to accept the Humanitarian Award on behalf of the late rapper at the 2019 BET Awards. The honor was presented by rapper T.I. to Nipsey’s family who was joined onstage by London and Hussle’s children, Emani and Kross. Additionally, Nipsey’s grandmother gave a heartfelt statement, thanking the crowd for their overwhelming support following the rapper’s death. Holding onto a locket that featured an image of Nipsey, London showed a great amount of strength and resilience throughout the emotional moment. The rapper tragically passed away in March 2019 and to add to his tribute, the BET Awards altered their red carpet color to blue in his honor.
Destiny’s Child Reunion (2005)
Another memorable moment from the award show that’s worth mentioning is Destiny and her three children surprising the audience with a sultry reunion. Despite announcing their split earlier that year, Michelle Williams, Kelly Rowland and Beyoncé, took the stage for a remarkable return that left a lasting impression on the crowd. Their bond and seamless chemistry were put on display as they performed a popular hit from their final studio album, “Destiny Fulfilled.” During their set, the iconic girl group included an impromptu lapdance with Magic Johnson, Nelly, and Terrence Howard. The reunion not only celebrated the group’s musical journey but also highlighted some nostalgia amongst longtime supporters.
John Singleton Tribute (2021)
The 2019 award ceremony saw a touching tribute, honoring the late filmmaker John Singleton and all of his contributions to the film industry. On the red carpet, celebs including Tyrese Gibson and Taraji P. Henson, opened up about working with Singleton and the impact he had on lives and careers. Additionally, actors Morris Chestnut, who starred in Singleton’s debut film ‘Boyz N The Hood’ and Damson Idris, who played the main character in the filmmaker’s drama series ‘Snowfall’, took the stage to share a few kind words about Singleton. These heartwarming tributes didn’t just highlight Singleton’s life but celebrated the legacy he left behind that is still felt today.
