As Tory Lanez’s sentencing date inches closer, his legal team is working hard to get him the lightest punishment possible.
On Wednesday, journalist Meghann Cuniff, who has covered Lanez’s trial closely, revealed that his attorneys are making a last-ditch plea to get him out of jail. Per the memo, the defense wants the “Say It” crooner to serve probation and complete a substance abuse program. While a bold request, it comes as no surprise. Lanez is facing a 22-year sentence for shooting former friend Megan Thee Stallion in the foot back in July 2020, though the prosecution recently recommended 13 years. His legal team has already pushed for a failed appeal of the verdict. He was ultimately convicted of assault with a semiautomatic firearm, carrying a loaded, unregistered gun in a vehicle, and discharging a firearm in a grossly negligent manner to cause bodily injury.
I have Tory Lanez's sentencing memo for shooting Megan Thee Stallion. It asks that he be released from jail to probation and a substance abuse program. I am putting together an article that will publish about the time I go live on YouTube at 5 p.m. PST: https://t.co/GDQHJItRiB

Lanez maintained his innocence and pointed to Kelsey Harris as the shooter, despite her previously claiming it was him in the early stages of the investigation. Harris took the stand but denied remembering much of her previous statement. In the end, another witness testified that he saw Lanez “firing everywhere” during that fateful night. Lanez has dragged Meg on songs and social media. His supporters have also rallied around him, accusing the Grammy award winner of lying about shooting altogether.
The 31-year-old will learn his fate on August 7th, that is, of course, if the hearing is not rescheduled again.
