Tracee Ellis Ross Is Set To Bring Jodie To Comedy Central As A ‘Daria’ Spin-Off

Black-ish star Tracee Ellis Ross is gearing up to produce and star in Jodie, a Daria spin-off set to air on Comedy Central. She will be voicing the character, Jodie Landon, according to Shadow and Act.

In the original series, Landon appeared as the “token Black girl” at Lawndale High School, while being faced with daily disrespect. The young teen and her football star boyfriend, Mack, provided fans with some much-needed melanin perspective to the desired cartoon, Essence added.

Daria was a spin-off of Beavis and Butthead. It highlighted the perils of high school Generation X for five seasons on MTV from 1997 to 2002.

The new series will follow a Generation Z version of Jodie Landon, Daria’s friend, at the fictional Lawndale High. It will pick up with her character graduating from college and entering a complicated world, outlets report.

According to Deadline, ”The series will satirize workplace culture, Gen Z struggles, the artifice of social media, and more. With themes of empowerment along [with] gender and racial lines, explorations of privilege, and a wicked sense of humor, “Jodie” will shine a light on the personal and professional issues young Black women face today.”

MTV Studios will produce the Jodie-centered spin-off. Grace Nkenge Edwards will serve as the head writer on the project.

A timeframe of when production will begin has yet to be announced.
