For those who travel to experience adventure, this piece is for you. While many people travel to eat, sightsee, and relax; some travel to live closer to the edge and mark off items on their bucket lists.
Adventure awaits around the world. Whether you want to ski down an Aspen slope or climb Mount Everest, the list of things to do is countless.
Here are some options that made our list.
Dinner in the sky is a thrilling experience for those brave enough. More than 60 countries across five continents have participated in the experience. Swim the Great Barrier Reef. If water, diving, and snorkeling are your thing, a trip to Queensland, Australia, is a must. The Great Barrier Reef is the oldest living organism on Earth. It stretches more than 1,600 miles, has more than 1,500 species of fish, and can be seen from outer space. Unfortunately, it has been rapidly eroding due to coral bleaching and global warming. So if you’re going to go, go!
Take a hot air balloon ride in Turkey. Pictures of dozens of hot air balloons flying over Cappadocia, Turkey, have gone viral over the past few years. And as a result, more people have added the location to their bucket list to experience the top-listed excursion. A ride over the central region gives visitors 360-degree views of the famous limestone spires and “fairy chimneys” that can’t be seen from ground level.
Go on an African Safari. I mean, what’s more adventurous than being in the wild? Okavango Delta, Botswana, was listed as a must by Condé Nast Traveler. Travelers can ride on a mokoro canoe for the best and most intimate look at the roaming elephants, antelope, and cheetahs, among others.
Swim in Mexico’s cenotes. Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula boasts a wealth of unique and natural beauty. Many venture there to see its cavernous cenotes. Floating in one of these natural sinkholes is one for the books. When in Tulum, visit Dos Ojos (“Two Eyes”) to view one of the planet’s most beautiful underwater sites.
Go sand surfing in the Sahara. If you can stand the heat, then the colossal dunes of the Sahara are calling your name. Partaking in the extreme sport of sand surfing—going down on a surfboard. It makes for epic pictures and unmatched views.
Surf the California waves. Huntington Beach in California’s Orange County is widely known as “Surf City” for its ability to bring in surfers from across the globe. The miles of highly surfable beach waves give visitors plenty of room to spread out. It’s a place to go year-round, summer, and winter (an excellent time to go if you don’t want a crowd).
Take the five-day trek to Machu Picchu, Peru. The famous Incan citadel is located in the Andes. Although a bus ride can visit the site, some travelers can take the five-day trek along the 26-mile-long Inca Trail. But if that’s too extreme, tour operator Sam Travel Peru will drop hikers at kilometer marker 104 to do the whole experience in 24 hours.
Zipline over Niagara Falls. Known as the MistRider and 2,200-foot long, the excursion opened to visitors in Ontario during the summer of 2016. It has since attracted daring travelers. The ride goes from the top of the Niagara Gorge to nearly the bottom, with four ziplines reaching speeds of over 40mph. It’s open from June through December.
Enjoy!
