Leanna Lenee, fiancée of Colorado Buffaloes football star Travis Hunter, has broken her silence after facing waves of online criticism. Her statement comes after Hunter defended her during a Twitch stream, addressing scrutiny surrounding several public appearances.
The backlash ignited after viral clips surfaced, including one from the Heisman ceremony where Colorado head coach Deion Sanders seemingly asked Lenee to stand as Hunter’s name was called. Another video from a pop-up event in New York City showed Lenee sitting while Hunter interacted with who people assumed were fans, prompting further speculation about her demeanor.
In a lengthy address on Monday, Lenee shared her perspective and expressed frustration with the narratives being formed about her. She explained that at the Heisman ceremony, she initially stayed seated because Hunter’s mother didn’t stand up. “When his name was called, I was going to get up, but his mom didn’t, so I stayed seated with her,” Lenee said. She added that Sanders didn’t “tell” her to stand but encouraged her to go to Hunter. “I wanted the moment to be about him and his family,” she said, revealing she stepped out of the camera’s view intentionally to avoid scrutiny for crying.
Addressing the pop-up event in New York, Lenee clarified that she wasn’t upset with fans. She explained she had been actively participating by taking pictures and talking with fans, but by the time the clip was filmed, she was simply asking Hunter if she should stay with him or join their family, who were shopping nearby. She also pointed out that the individuals in the video were Adidas staff, not fans, as some had speculated.
Lenee also took the opportunity to dispel rumors about her relationship with Hunter, rejecting claims that she ignored his initial messages until he became famous. She explained that Hunter first messaged her while he was in another relationship, and she didn’t respond until he was single. “I don’t do home-wrecking,” she said. “I support women and would never want that done to me.” She acknowledged that Hunter wasn’t her “type” initially because of his age and a history of cheating but said her perception changed as she got to know him. “Travis is a phenomenal and wonderful human being, and that’s why we’re together,” she added.
Lenee expressed frustration with the negativity she has faced, stating, “People are finding every single little thing and trying to make it something it’s not.” She concluded her statement by saying, “This is the truth, and I won’t be addressing it again.”
