What was supposed to be a joyful 19th birthday became a terrifying experience for Malachai, who commemorated the milestone in the ICU. But by Tuesday, Chaney had uplifting news: “He’s out of ICU and in a stabilized room,” the actor told TMZ.
Chaney says his son was thrown almost the length of a football field as powerful winds ripped through their Atlanta suburb. The actor described the scene like something out of a horror film: “The windstorm levitated him in bed, right before he saw the walls closing in on him.”
He woke up trapped under debris and immediately began searching for his son. His wife, Ayesha, returned home to find their world in ruins.
Malachai was later discovered in the woods with severe injuries, including broken ribs and multiple facial wounds. Chaney added, “He doesn’t remember the events that got him into the hospital.”
A surprise birthday video from Shaquille O’Neal helped lift Malachai’s spirits as he continues his road to recovery. Chaney is prepared to remain by his son’s side for as long as needed, saying he’s camping out at Grady Hospital to support him through this critical time.
In the aftermath, an aunt launched a GoFundMe to help the family cope with their losses. The campaign has raised over $97,000.
“He has a new outlook on life going forward,” Chaney shared.
