Tristan Thompson took over the care of his 17-year-old brother after his mother died, and now he’s taking the legal steps to make it official.
TMZ obtained legal docs that show the NBA star is asking the court to name him as the sole legal guardian of his younger brother, Amari Thompson. The filing states that Amari’s father, Trevor Thompson, has been absent from his life, making Tristan the next closest family member.
Amari has several medical diagnoses, including epilepsy, that render him unable to care for himself. Tristan has been caring for him since their mother passed away in January. According to the legal docs, Amari resides with Tristan at his Hidden Hills home.
In addition to the physical care, Amari stands to inherit six figures from his mother’s estate, and Tristan intends to protect the inheritance.
People reports that Tristan also plans to submit an application for U.S. citizenship. He was born in Canada.
Their mother, Andrea, died of a heart attack at her Toronto home on January 5.
