If Donald Trump becomes president again, his status as a convicted felon may cause major issues when trying to travel internationally – an essential part of being president and dealing with other world leaders.
According to the World Population Review, 38 countries, including close U.S. allies like the United Kingdom, Australia, and Canada, have strict rules against allowing felons to enter their countries, even with a valid passport.
This includes nations at the center of major foreign policy issues, like China, Israel, and Mexico, where a U.S. President would likely need to visit for important meetings and negotiations.
While other governments could potentially grant special permission for a sitting U.S. President to travel there, the process can be very complicated, as former President George W. Bush experienced.
During his presidency, Bush, who had an old misdemeanor drunk driving conviction from decades earlier, had difficulties getting approved to travel to Canada for an official state visit. He ultimately got a special waiver to enter, but his situation was different from Trump’s – Bush’s was just a misdemeanor from long ago, not 34 recent felony convictions.
The irony of Trump possibly needing to get special approval to travel abroad as President wouldn’t be lost on people, given his history of calling foreigners “criminals” and pushing for tighter U.S. travel restrictions like border closures and ideological travel bans.
If elected again, Trump’s criminal record could create major diplomatic problems, limiting his ability to represent American interests globally and attend crucial meetings with world leaders without first having to navigate a complex web of international travel restrictions for felons.
Based on data from the World Population Review, here is a list of countries that do not allow convicted felons to enter:
  • Argentina
  • Australia
  • Brazil
  • Cambodia
  • Canada
  • Chile
  • China
  • Cuba
  • Dominican Republic
  • Egypt
  • Ethiopia
  • Hong Kong
