Former President Donald Trump is once again making headlines with a fiery response on social media. This time, Trump took to Truth Social to call out CNN commentator Van Jones after Jones praised Vice President Kamala Harris’s economic agenda. The former president didn’t hold back, reminding Jones and his followers of the significant strides he claims to have made for the Black community during his time in office.
In his post, Trump accused Van Jones of being ungrateful for the work he did on Criminal Justice Reform, Opportunity Zones, and the long-term funding of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Trump claimed that Jones, who was allegedly emotional during a meeting in the Oval Office, had “begged” for his help to get Criminal Justice Reform passed. The legislation, passed in 2018, was widely seen as a bipartisan victory aimed at reducing recidivism and reforming sentencing laws.
Trump wrote, “Lightweight Political commentator Van Jones begged me, while in the Oval Office and with tears flowing from his eyes, to help get Criminal Justice Reform approved by the United States Senate. I got it done, with Conservative help, and this lowlife, Jones, never once called to thank me, or the others that helped, for what we had done.”
Trump continued by listing what he views as his major accomplishments for the Black community, asserting that he’s done more for Black Americans than any president since Abraham Lincoln. “Along with Opportunity Zones, the long term funding of HISTORICALLY BLACK COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES, and much more, I’ve done more for our black population than anyone other than, perhaps, Abraham Lincoln!!! Sorry, but that’s the way it is!!!” he added.
Van Jones has not publicly responded to Trump’s latest social media outburst. However, the commentator’s recent praise of Harris’s economic efforts seems to have struck a nerve with the former president, who often points to his administration’s policies as proof of his commitment to African American communities.
