Donald Trump has taken another petty step in his ongoing battle with Democratic rivals, ordering a federal investigation into ActBlue, the primary fundraising platform for the Democratic Party.
In an executive order signed Thursday, Trump directed newly appointed Attorney General Pam Bondi to dig into allegations raised by Republicans that ActBlue may have allowed illegal campaign donations. The move marks yet another moment where Trump is using the power of the presidency to target political opponents directly.
ActBlue, a key player in grassroots fundraising efforts for Democrats nationwide, didn’t hold back in its response. Leaders at the organization blasted the investigation, calling it an “oppressive use of power” by the Trump administration.
Democratic leaders had been bracing for this moment, anticipating that ActBlue would eventually land in the crosshairs as tensions between the two parties continued to heat up. They swiftly condemned the President’s actions, accusing him of weaponizing the Justice Department for political gain.
ActBlue’s CEO, Regina Wallace-Jones, reassured supporters that the platform would continue to operate transparently and in full compliance with federal and state laws, vowing that the organization would not be intimidated.
