President-elect Donald Trump took a swipe at Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, referring to him as the “Governor” of the “Great State of Canada” in a Truth Social post.
“It was a pleasure to have dinner the other night with Governor Justin Trudeau of the Great State of Canada,” Trump wrote. “I look forward to seeing the Governor again soon so that we may continue our in-depth talks on Tariffs and Trade, the results of which will be truly spectacular for all! DJT.”
The jab comes as Trump threatens to impose 25% tariffs on all goods from Canada and Mexico, as well as additional increases on Chinese imports. Economists have warned of the potential economic impact on American consumers and businesses, though Trump has downplayed those concerns.
Trudeau, speaking at a Halifax Chamber of Commerce event, criticized Trump’s tariff plans, arguing they would significantly raise costs for Americans. “Americans are beginning to wake up to the real reality that tariffs on everything from Canada would make life a lot more expensive,” Trudeau said. He also vowed retaliation if the U.S. follows through on the tariffs, acknowledging that working with Trump’s administration might be more challenging this time compared to 2016.
Despite the tariff tensions, Trudeau and Trump have maintained dialogue, including a phone call last month that Trudeau described as a “good call” and a meeting earlier this month at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort, which both leaders called “productive.”
