According to ABC News reporter Johnathan Karl and close sources, Donald Trump refused to call in the National Guard during Wednesday’s riot.
“As the storming of the capitol was happening, we are told, our team, that President Trump rebuffed efforts to authorize the National Guard to come in, to bring the national guard in.”
“All throughout the afternoon he resisted, refused to authorize or to agree to the authorization of the national guard to come in and he was only moved to change his mind on that after the intervention of other White House officials who told him for the sake of the country, the National Guard needed to be called in.”
“And convinced him and urged him that if he did not do this, that the situation would get worse, and the situation would become direr, and would spread beyond Washington DC, and he finally agreed to do it,” Karl stated.
It took numerous aides to explain to Trump the severity of what was going on at the U.S. Capitol for him to budge on calling in the National Guard. Another stark contrast to his response to the Black Lives Matter protests that occurred last year.
According to Ken Cuccinelli, the acting Deputy Secretary of Homeland Security, he had no information on the rebuffing of the National Guard by Trump. But admitted it was not a “good day in America.”
It was Trump who repeatedly blasted Democratic Mayors and Governors for not calling in the National Guard to control what was generally peaceful demonstrations against racial injustice. Trump chastised city leaders, calling them “weak” for not responding to the protests like he would, while also threatening to do so himself.
But today, Trump’s true colors showed brighter than ever, as he refused to protect the White House and the people inside by delaying the National Guard to come in and regain order. It was a day where we needed an “acting” president who cares about democracy and humanity, but instead, we got a selfish man with injured pride. Trump’s proven the opposite; he cares more about himself and those who support him even when he is blatantly wrong. As he continues to lie and mislead his followers with the baseless idea that the election was stolen from him, we must hold him accountable for today’s attempted coup that took place by the people that idolize him.
It will take time for the actual details of today’s events to unfold, but however, you slice it, Trump did not show up for America. Today’s response will instead ignite his shameless supporters to continue to dismantle democracy and view today as some sort of ill-gotten victory.
Rioters are proud that they forced their way into the capitol, fought police, destroyed property, and had photoshoots in elected officials’ offices. Not realizing that someone lost their life and America is now seen as a mockery.
Even with your “presidency” coming to an end, Trump, let us hope your impeachment comes sooner.
