Donald Trump is taking aim at Walmart after the retailer announced price increases tied to costs from his administration’s tariff agenda.
In a sharply worded post on Truth Social, Trump wrote, “Walmart should STOP trying to blame Tariffs as the reason for raising prices throughout the chain,” adding, “Walmart made BILLIONS OF DOLLARS last year, far more than expected.”
He didn’t stop there. “Between Walmart and China, they should, as is said, ‘EAT THE TARIFFS,’ and not charge valued customers ANYTHING,” Trump continued. “I’ll be watching, and so will your customers!!!”
The criticism came just after Walmart said it plans to start raising prices next month to offset increased costs from Trump’s tariff policies. A Walmart spokesperson responded, “We’ll keep prices as low as we can for as long as we can given the reality of small retail margins.”
On Thursday, the company reported its quarterly profits dropped to $4.45 billion, down from $5.10 billion last year. CEO Doug McMillon emphasized the challenge of absorbing tariff-related costs, stating Walmart isn’t “able to absorb all the pressure.”
Trump’s comments follow a surprising shift in trade policy earlier in the week, as his administration slashed tariffs on Chinese imports from 145% to 30% for a 90-day period. China responded by reducing its own tariffs from 125% to 10%.
