Donald Trump has weighed in on former President Joe Biden’s recent prostate cancer diagnosis, offering his sympathy during a press conference but also sparking a wave of confusion after referencing a medically non-existent “stage 9” cancer.
“I think it’s very sad, actually,” Trump said. “I’m surprised the public wasn’t notified a long time ago, because to get to stage nine, that’s a long time.”
The issue? There is no such thing as “stage 9” cancer. In medical practice, cancer is typically categorized from stages 1 through 4, with stage 4 being the most advanced. Trump’s mention of a stage that doesn’t exist had medical professionals and social media buzzing.
While the president used the moment to highlight his own recent physical and cognitive exam—claiming he “aced” the tests—the spotlight quickly shifted to the misinformation. He appeared to question Biden’s medical evaluations, even throwing shade at the doctors who previously vouched for Biden’s cognitive health.
The misstep underscores how easily medical misinformation can spread, especially when delivered from the White House podium. Experts were quick to clarify that prostate cancer does not extend beyond stage 4, regardless of severity or progression.
Though Trump’s comments were likely intended to express concern, the factual inaccuracy has turned the moment into a talking point, not just about Biden’s health but also about the importance of precise communication from world leaders.
